Your Active Edge Chiropractic
& Functional Medicine Team
Until we have an empowering experience that allows us to see the repairing power of our own bodies, most of us don’t realize our true healing potential. Fulfillment of this potential requires the right tools and resources, knowledge of what those are, and a little effort.
Our signature approach harnesses your body’s amazing ability to heal. To do this, we combine elements of education, alignment, balance and retraining to create patterns and habits you can maintain for life.
With our signature plans:
Our doctors and staff act as mentors to Educateyou and guide you every step of the way
Simultaneously, we’ll address:
Addressing these elements simultaneously gives you the right tools to heal efficiently and thoroughly so that you can Maintain the vitality you’ve achieved, prevent future recurrence, and proactively sustain your health.
They often include a combination of functional medicine and the Active Edge brand of Chiropractic care as improvement in one area fuels recovery in the other.
And most importantly, our signature programs require you to commit to yourself as fully as we commit to you and your success.
They are not for everyone, but if you are accepted into the program, you will experience health you didn’t realize you were missing. Continue reading to learn more about how each element of our programs can have components of chiropractic care, functional medicine, or both.
We believe that you should be your biggest and best advocate for your health. We believe that education is at the root of your understanding and decision-making process. We also believe that knowledge without action is useless.
So we strive to help our patients not only learn how to stay well, but to implement practices and habits that help them apply the things they’ve learned and maintain the vitality they’ve discovered. We encourage our patients to take their health into their own hands. In addition to the home exercise programs we recommend to prevent re-injury, we encourage our patients to receive regular adjustments and soft tissue work to address minor problems as they arise.
This means knowing how “great” feels and recognizing “not quite right” before there is a “problem.”Pain is the last symptom to show up and the first symptom to disappear when your body is under stress. Finally, we are here to be your mentors for life. As new stressors cause new problems to arise, we will be a constant resource for you.
We also pledge to continue providing educational opportunities by inviting guest speakers and hosting special engagements and workshops so patient’s may continue learning and renewing your inspiration to continue propelling yourself towards your optimal function and optimal health.
Our bodies are amazing. They are designed to adapt so that if we’re injured today and need to run from a wolf tomorrow, we can. It only takes us about 2 weeks to develop a compensation pattern that reduces our awareness of an injury so that we can be ready to defend, save, or feed ourselves if danger should arise.
Our bodies are designed to make it to tomorrow and aren’t so concerned with 20 years from now. If we can’t make it through tomorrow, it doesn’t matter that the compensation we developed today will cause degeneration in our knee, or shoulder or back.
Just like it’s a lot easier to stop smoking after one pack of cigarettes than it is after 40 years of chain smoking, the longer a problem persists and the longer your body has been using its current processes or patterns, the longer they take to break.
Retraining at Active Edge Chiropractic includes rehabilitative exercises specific to each patient.
Our physicians evaluate muscular strength, balance, and firing activity in conjunction with movement patterns, form, and flexibility to retrain and reinforce other in-office treatments such as massage and adjustments. Additionally, we empower our patients to take their recovery and health into their own hands. Through education and home rehab programs, we give our patients the edge they need to heal efficiently and prevent further injury.
This principal of retraining from the root of the problem and restoring basic pathways and patterns applies to your systemic health as well.
Often, the two are interrelated. For example, a gallbladder doesn’t just get sick or develop stones overnight. That happens over a period of time as a result of continued insult to the digestive system or prolonged deficiency of certain minerals, vitamins, and nutrients. Gallbladder stress can easily present as chronic shoulder pain prior to you ever knowing you have an issue with you gallbladder.
Another example: If you’re in a constant state of stress, your body recognizes that this isn’t a great time for you to reproduce, so it steals from your reproductive systems to feed your stress coping systems. This may present as migraines, brain fog, chronic pain or a host of other physical complaints.
In each of these cases, identifying all underlying elements is essential to restoring balance. Once that first step is achieved, retraining means re-establishing healthy patterns and habits are essential for long-term wellness and prevention of relapse or future recurrence.
Your body is in a constant state of flux and opposing forces work together to keep us balanced inside and out. That juxtaposition is good and we need up and down, back and forth, left and right, etc to be communicating well for our body to function optimally.
Think about it like this… You’re watching the longest game of tug o’war in history. The teams are relatively evenly matched. There is constant shifting towards one side or the other but neither team can quite get the other over the center line. This is how your body works on a daily basis.
Now let’s see what happens if one of the tuggers pulls the smaller team over the line; You’re Out of Balance so to speak.
Now, let’s apply this analogy to our bodies. The teams can be any opposing processes in your body. Let’s do two examples. One that would apply to physical care and another for more physiological restoration.
Physical (musculoskeletal) Care: The two teams are opposing muscle groups. For simplicity sake, let’s say muscles on your front side vs muscles on your back side. Now, let’s say you’ve been sitting a lot… studying, working, watching tv, driving, eating dinner, etc.
Those muscles that bend your hip are one team. The opposing team would then be the muscles that make you stand back up or kick your leg behind you, or walk. Our bodies are designed to move and to make it to tomorrow.
So when we spend an extended period of time in one position, our bodies sort of forget how to move temporarily (you’ve noticed this when you’re stiff standing up after sitting for a while).
Now let’s say this continues and the amount of time you spend sitting out-weighs the amount of time you spend standing or walking. Those muscles that are on your front side are constantly being shortened and don’t have the opportunity to lengthen fully, so they eventually shorten.
You know this as being “tight” or “inflexible.” Well when those muscles are tight or shortened, it’s like you have a team of cheaters on your front side. They went ahead and wrapped the rope around a pole, so the back side team couldn’t possibly pull them even to center.
Meanwhile, the back side team is working extra hard, in fact they’re working so hard that they’re starting to get frustrated and yell at each other. This yelling is what you’re hearing your body tell you when you sense that what you’re feeling isn’t quite right.
Your run feels lopsided or back is hurting after shopping, or you’re getting shooting pains every now and again.
In this case, as in many other musculoskeletal injuries, your problem is not where you are feeling the pain, it’s that you are out of balance. Those cues are your body telling you that it can’t work like it should because somebody is cheating and somebody else isn’t pulling his/her weight.
The two teams in this example may represent different organ systems that work together or chemical reactions in your body that counter one another. For the purposes of simplicity let’s look at your adrenal system as a whole. Your adrenal system is your stress coping system.
There are 3 types of stress: Physical, Chemical, and Emotional.
On the other team is your stress mitigating/balancing adrenal system. For every pull from a stressor, the adrenal system has to release some energy to then pull back and repair or restore.
If the adrenal system is not being replenished by nutrients being brought in and broken down or the stressors are just so abundant that that the adrenal system cannot replenish fast enough, the stressors win.
That means you notice a whole lot more physical discomfort, the foods you’re eating that your body doesn’t love make you even more bloated, and little emotional stressors that you usually handle with ease make you snap!. You’re not “crazy” and you’re not “getting old.” You’re just out of balance.
The recovery would have been much easier right? The reinforcements could have helped the struggling team while they were still on their feet rather than having to pick them all up and dust them off right?
Think about sending in reinforcements as being proactive about your health. You’re noticing that something isn’t quite right, but the pain is only there sometimes or your bloodwork is still “normal”. The earlier you restore balance, the less effort and clean up you have to do later.
We’re here to locate where your imbalances stem from so that we can work together to actively and help your body reorganize, regroup, and get back in the game.
Chiropractic adjustments kick starts and supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
