I was inspired to begin teaching yoga after the success and joy I found in my own yoga practice. I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training through Yoga on High in Short North in 2013. A self-professed nerd for yoga, I’m very excited to introduce others to this practice that has improved my life in ways I never could have imagined when I started in 2008. I’m passionate about inclusivity, and strive to create a class environment that is welcoming to all. Yoga can be a beneficial practice to anyone who is willing to give it a try. Regardless of fitness level, body type, or background, I believe I can help you find the specific benefits of yoga for your needs. Whether you come to class for improved strength or flexibility, aligned posture, or stress reduction, I’ll help you find what you’re looking for and more! And if anyone wants to chat with me about something more than yoga, I also love spring, barefoot running, and hiking with my dogs.
Velma Garnes has been a fitness enthusiast most of her life. In her school days, she ran track, flirted briefly with gymnastics, and settled on cheerleading and track in High School.
This enthusiasm for fitness remains today, as evidenced by her certifications as a personal trainer, SPINNING instructor, a National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist (NASM-PES), and Ashtanga (Power) Yoga instructor.
In addition to the aforementioned certifications, Velma has earned three degrees that have contributed greatly to her success as an excellent fitness trainer:
- A Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology, from California University of Pennsylvania, Cum Laude
- a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Administration from Ohio Dominican University,
- an Associate’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Studies from Columbus State Community College.
This combined with 2 years in clinical human performance laboratory work, 25 years as a personal trainer and work experiences she gained while in school, have all given Velma the opportunity to pursue one of her interests – sharing her love and value of fitness with others.
